Warning for Windows users

XTide was designed for Unix and X11, not Microsoft Windows.  If you want to try to use it under Windows anyway, there's a precompiled binary for the command-line client, and there are also some ports.  However, these are all supported by their respective maintainers.  Please route support questions accordingly.

Harmonics files

All data for the U.S. and associated locales available from the National Ocean Service web site as of 2009-12-22 have been imported.  Stations in the Netherlands and U.K. are also included.

Data for locations outside of the U.S. are for non-commercial use only!

  • Germany:  Investigation by Jan Deepen in 2009 revealed significant, uncorrectable differences with authoritative predictions, so the German data were retired from the database at the end of 2009.

XTide source code distribution

• xtide-2.11.tar.bz2, the current stable release of XTide.  Requires libtcd.  You also need a harmonics file; see above.

World Vector Shoreline data

World Vector Shoreline data for optional use with XTide 2.5 or newer.  37 MB.  If 37 megs is too much to download, you can download files individually and make do with the lower resolutions.  Find the individual files in ftp://ftp.flaterco.com/xtide/wvs_unpacked/.

These files were published on the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) 5-Minute Gridded Global Relief Data CD-ROM (ETOPO5), 1993, and are public domain.  They are available from NOAA at http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/global/relief/ETOPO5/BOUNDARY/WVS.  Related information is available at http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/fliers/93mgg01.html.  If the files are obtained from NOAA, the filenames must be changed to all lowercase letters to work with XTide.

  Software:

  • congen-1.6.1.tar.bz2.  The Congen package includes libcongen, a C++ library for generating the speeds, equilibrium arguments, and node factors of tidal constituents, and congen, a command-line program for generating the speeds, equilibrium arguments, and node factors of tidal constituents using text files for input and output.  This package requires a case-sensitive file system to build correctly.

  Old crap

  • xtide-1.6.2.tar.gz, the final, frozen revision of XTide 1.  No longer supported.
  • I no longer support the Java applets for XTide.  There will be no Java support in XTide 2.  However, the unmaintained, unsupported Java applets can still be downloaded from xtide_java_jdk1.0.tar.gz.  The JDK 1.1 update, xtide_java_jdk1.1.tar.gz, was never finished.
  • harmbase_2004-08-09.tar.gz, old harmonic constant management system.  Requires Postgres (see README).
  • converters.tar.gz, software to convert (1) From Ed Wallner's TIDES 4 format to XTide's harmonics file format; (2) From XTide format to TIDES 4 format; (3) From the NOS data file format to XTide format.  These converters were obsoleted by Harmbase, which incorporates better conversions.  You also need to download the mapfile to use these.  Last revision 1997-08-09.
  • map.txt, map file for use with the preceding conversion software.  Last revision 2001-01-15.
